Europe Week at Prestwick Academy

Europe Day 2025 was an amazing opportunity for those junior ambassadors involved – Ellie T, Lauchlan M, Poppy D, Avneet K, Neave C, Brooke S, Caitlin B, Melissa H and me – in the teaching aspect and learning. As I was teaching, I got to gain both the experience of teaching and learning because I was learning the answers to every quiz.

The day started with Melissa and I going around collecting donations to our “Modern Languages Europe Day Teacher Raffle” which the prizes had been gifted to us by teachers and Junior Ambassadors. We made sure to ask every teacher/ member of staff in our school so that they all had the opportunity to participate.

When second period came Brooke and I taught an S1 class. We were presenting a Europe Quiz all about geography, history and general knowledge. We gave out prizes to the group that came first. We continued selling our raffle tickets before we started the draw. After the draw, we then delivered the prizes to the winning staff members. Once everyone had received their prizes, we had our lunch and started setting up for our “Lunchtime Bake sale”.

When the lunch bell rang, we were all ready to sell a mix of shop bought and homemade cakes which was a big hit – people even came back for a second round! Teachers, staff and pupils all got involved in the Bake sale which left us with almost nothing left. Once lunch had finished me, we went to an S2 class to quiz them on Europe. When we finished, we started to count all the money we had made, we were all ecstatic with the amount. We made £428, half of which will be going towards our Strasbourg trip.

Prestwick Academy took the whole week 6-9 May to celebrate Europe day with a range of exciting activities. All classes started the mornings with a presentation about the history of EU. All teachers were sent a Power point with starters to use that week (thanks to another school resources from EPAS website), big screens in the foyer had a history of EU presentation shown.

In Modern Languages the Junior Ambassadors created resources on Eurovision and an European Quiz, which they taught to S1-3. Pupil takeover gave them so much confidence, well done!

In Social Subjects S3s debated about who is best partner for UK – Europe or US? We held a few fundraising activities like a staff raffle, bake sale and face painting to get some funds for Strasbourg trip and a donation for local homeless charity.

Overall, our S3 Junior Ambassadors loved taking charge of the lessons and our S1 and S2 pupils really enjoyed being taught by their peers.
